She was born Jan. 3, 1924 in Yadkin County to the late Paul Calvin and Delsie Reece Gwyn.
Mrs. Childress was a graduate of Boonville High School, and worked for several years at Blackwelders Knitting in Mocksville.
She loved gardening, farming, playing bingo and word searches and was a devoted homemaker.
Mrs. Childress was a member of Charity Baptist Church and had attended Yadkinville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Vern Childress; a daughter, Nancy Childress Peele; step son, Bud Childress; two brothers, Everette Gwyn, Calvin Gwyn; and an infant sister.
Surviving are her step daughter, Katie Childress; sister, Katie G. Hagenah; brother, Wilson Gwyn; two grandchildren; two step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
The family received friends from Wednesday, April 7 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 8 at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster.
Burial will follow in the Charity Baptist Church Cemetery.
