The Yadkinville Town Commissioners reviewed and approved a draft Comprehensive Transportation Plan recommendation that includes the extension of a two-lane extension of E. Main Street to Mackie Road Monday night during its regularly scheduled monthly meeting.

“The following (roads) are recommended to be constructed on new location to improve connectivity: Progress Lane (SR 1634) two-lane extension, from East Lee Avenue (SR1146) to Sara Lee Boulevard (SR 1421); Unifl Industrial Drive (SR 1785) two-lane extension from East Main Street Old U.S. 421 (SR 1605) to Mackie Road (SR 1500),” said Michael Abuya, one of two representatives from the Northwest Piedmont Council of Governments who offered the recommendations to the town.

Abuya also recommended these additional roadway enhancements.

• An interchange south of the Stone Bridge Drive (SR 1131) and Beamer Road (SR 1415) intersection;

• A two-lane connector from the proposed interchange to Stone Bridge Drive (SR 1134);

• And a two-lane realignment of Beamer Road (SR 1415) just north of the new interchange.

In the NWCOG report submitted to the Yadkin Town Commissioners, issues relating to roadway traffic capacity were also addressed.

“The following recommendations have capacity issues and or are projected to have continuing capacity issues in the future,” the draft report read.

“Improvements to these facilities will increase capacity, relieve congestion and enhance safety.”

Those listed were:

• U.S. 601 State Street - “It is recommended that U.S. 601 be widened with a middle left turn lane from the southern Planning Area Boundary, just south of Deep Creek, to U.S. 421 and from Main Street (SR 1605/SR 1314) to the northern Planning Area Boundary at Dobbins Pond.”

• Main Street at Old U.S. 421 (SR 1314/SR 1605) - “It is recommended that Main Street be widened with a middle left turn lane from Unifi Industrial Drive (SR 1765) to Progress Lane (SR 1634) and from Washington Street to West Lee Avenue (SR 1134).”

There were also minor widening improvements suggested in the report.

“The following routes do not currently have capacity issues but are recommended to be upgraded to two 12-foot lanes with two-foot paved shoulders to improve safety.”

The recommendations are:

• Main Street (SR 1314/SR 1605) from eastern Planning Area Boundary to Union Cross Church Road (SR 1509)

•From Myers Road (SR 1508) to Unifl Industrial Drive (SR 1765)

•From West Lee Avenue (SR 1134) to the western Planning Area Boundary, North Lee Avenue

•From U.S. 601 to West Main Street, Stone Bridge Drive, Billy Reynolds Road (SR 1134)

•From West Lee Avenue to Fleming Road (SR 1142), Sara lee Boulevard

•From U.S. 601 to the proposed Progress Lane extension and Hoots Road

•From U.S. 601 to the western Planning Area Boundary.

“The Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART) has a fixed route bus service between Greensboro and Boone. The bus route crosses the planning area on U.S. 421 and has an existing Park and Ride Lot on U.S. 601 and Pine Valley Road south of the interchange. A proposed Park and Ride Lot, which will replace the existing one, will be located on U.S. 601 and Sara Lee Boulevard.”

There are no existing or recommended bicycle path route suggestions in the study.

The Yadkinville Volunteer Fire Department’s chief offered the town commissioners the monthly department report.

The chief reported the department had a controlled burn Saturday morning and five more are scheduled in the coming weeks.

The report included 12 auto accidents, nine power lines or trees down, seven public service, one grass or woods fire, five assisting other departments, three stand-bys, four fire education calls, five fire alarm activations, no vehicle fires, three structure or electrical fires, two gas leaks or gas spills, four investigations and 56 EMS assist calls for a total of 111 calls.

The total from last month was 113 with last year’s total at 1,157 and 768 year to date.

The 2009-2010 year to date calls are 873, an increase of 12 percent.

Yadkinville Police Department Chief W. Tim Parks made his monthly report for February, noting there were 24 reported crimes, 12 arrests, 37 citations and 477 calls for service with 6,746 miles driven. There were 13 parking citations with $50 collected in fines.

“Our burglaries temporarily subsided, but we continue to have problem areas,” Park wrote in his report. “The U.S. Secret Service, ATF and the U.S. District Attorney have reported that Justin Lee Brown has accepted a plea in federal court in reference to the burglary at Quality Hardware. His sentencing phase has not been conducted but will most likely receive about seven years active sentence.

“Our department has received a grant from the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program. Two Radars were received having the combined value of $3,000. This grant was fully funded and incurs no expense on the town’s behalf.”
