He was born July 19, 1948 in Yadkin County to the late Luke and Dorethie Matthews Saunders.
Mr. Saunders loved his family and was a great neighbor for the community.
He worked for C.W. Electric Company with 20 years of service and was a member of Mount Carmel Friends Meeting.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Jessie Pearl Myers, Mary Blanche Weatherman and Betty Jean Goodboe.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 17 years, Brenda C. Saunders of the home; a son, Luther Shane Saunders; stepson, Daniel (Mandy) Starling; three grandchildren, Meredith, Michael and Brittany Saunders; two step granddaughters, whom he loved very much, Karson and Katie Starling; step grandson, John David Kent; step granddaughter, Michelle Casstevens; three sisters, Zena Fleming, Shirley McIntosh and Patti (Tim) Ratledge; two brothers, Junior Saunders and Thomas Saunders; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Carter; and several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends on Thursday, Jan. 28, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
His funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 29, at Mount Carmel Friends Meeting by the Rev. Jeff Farmer and the Rev. Lenuel Lusk.
He lay in state for 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
